Mick Fanning Interview with Tracks Magazine

Here's a snippet of the interview with Mick Fanning in Tracks Magazine. The 29 year old, reigning ASP World Champion, has a lot on his plate, what with juggling the pressures of an ASP World Title defense against the best in the world, his duties as a loving husband, his status as a sporting icon within Australia, his role as surfers’ representative on the ASP Board, an extensive fitness regime, sponsorship responsibilities, etc., etc. So when Tracks Magazine sat down with him, they had no shortage of topics to hit upon: a new fin sponsor, his title defense and his role in the new ASP 36-man format. This…is their story…

Firstly Mick, when signing a new sponsorship agreement, is it the money or the product itself that you consider most – fins surely has to be performance-based decision?

What happened was I went and tried different fin systems, cause I was riding glass on fins and I was so set on them I couldn’t ride any other fin system. I eventually became sick of carrying 12 boards with glass ons. What I did was I got a couple of different fin systems put on a quiver of boards and took them all on the Red Bull boat in Indonesia last year and tried all the different ones together – and the FCS ones felt the best.

So you were one of the last guys on tour lugging around boards with set fins?

Yeah, it was heavy.

Literally.

Yeah.

So, after your little test – FCS won. Why them?

It just felt like the FCS fin system had an extra bit of zing. We’d copied my favourite fin exactly (that I was using in glass ons) so I was using that as well and they felt great.

Would you consider yourself a fin expert? Or are you a bit of a novice?

It’s one of those things where the slightest little change in your fin affects the board’s performance so much. And then it keeps evolving. Put it this way, I know…

Levi Sherwood Wins the British Round of the X-Fighters 2010!

Saturday night saw the return of the Red Bull X-Fighters to british soil at Battersea Power Station in London. With qualifying rained off on Friday night the event was unsure whether to go ahead, but behold, it did and what a night! Battle commenced under the clear nights sky beyond the shadow of the lit up Battersea chimneys and with the boys arriving in what can only be the most traditional way to travel in London - by Black Cabs.

With the riders taking to their 2 strokes, giving it some throttle to warm up, it was only a short time until slip ups occured, with Andre Villa losing control and lauching into the crowd - luckily bike, only just crashing into the crowd barrier. With 3 members of public hurt and Villa walking away with only a cut under his eye, it raised question whether the course was deemed safe.


With one jump closed and guys on hand to brush the ramps of mud, these boys were professional FMX riders and were raring to kick those bikes into life!

Battle commenced with some awesome Double Hart Attacks and Lazy Flips from Nate Adams, The One Hand Scorpion from Mike Mason, A No Hand Flip from Dany Torres and the wicked Scorpion Flip from Levi Sherwood.

It was a tense final to the 5th series of the X-Fighters with Levi Sherwood and Nate Adams pulling off some incredible tricks in a bid to win. A close score from the judges leaves the crowd biting their lips for the last point which could go either way! With the audience behind Levi the whole way the final helmet flashes up on screen and 'BOOM' the crowd cheer, clapping their banners as Levi Sherwood wins the London round of the Red Bull X-Fighters 2010!

Well done LEVI - What a night!

Freeze Festival

Freeze Festival is back once again this year for the third year running. Taking place at London's Battersea Power Station on October 29th - 31st.

Its an amazing snow sports and music festival featuring the best skiers and snowboarders who compete on a specially erected 32m high, 100m long real snow ramp. Riders including Olympic medalists Danny Kass, Peetu Piiroinen and Scotty Lago compete in the competition against a line up of bands and awesome international acts.
